{"id":19404,"date":"2024-01-20T12:42:47","date_gmt":"2024-01-20T10:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/?p=19404"},"modified":"2024-02-01T13:39:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T11:39:00","slug":"dr-olga-kandinskaia-as-a-moderator-for-session-2-of-the-green-and-sustainable-finance-conference-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/en\/dr-olga-kandinskaia-as-a-moderator-for-session-2-of-the-green-and-sustainable-finance-conference-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Olga Kandinskaia, as a moderator for session 2 of the Green and Sustainable Finance Conference #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a great pleasure to see our Associate Professor of Finance and Director of MSc in Green and Digital Management, Dr Olga Kandinskaia as the moderator for session 2 of the Green and Sustainable Finance Conference \u2013 Supported by the British High Commission in Nicosia and organized by Ideopsis ltd (Anthi Charalambous) and Grant Thornton Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a brief summary of what sustainable finance is about:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The famous Paris Agreement of 2015, where in article 2.1 (a) the parties agreed to commit to holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels (ideally below 1.5 degrees), also included article 2.1 (c): about the commitment to \u201cmake finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable finance has a key role to play in mitigating climate change and transitioning to green economy. Money is the fuel that drives the engine of the economy: what is not financed will struggle to grow and the other way round. Thus, sustainable finance is instrumental in delivering on the policy objectives under the European Green Deal with its ambitious main target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable finance aims to channel PRIVATE investment into the transition to a climate-neutral, climate-resilient, resource-efficient, and fair economy, and this should come in complement to PUBLIC spending.<\/li>\n<li>Now that we are already at the 1.49 degrees C warming level, the actions need to be implemented fast. In fact, as emphasized by Professor Megan Bowman \u201cALL finance must become sustainable\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interesting and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>remarkable topics<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>speakers:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green bonds are one way to go, as presented by<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcy.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fmarina-strovolidou%3Ftrk%3Dpublic_post-text&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cathina.kakopsitou%40uol.ac.cy%7C70a2728432ea4d7a53fb08dc23013586%7Cb5e1322f342e4a7ebb1e78d50e9fd700%7C0%7C0%7C638423735311901331%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=LXFidWxrIbAYbyJJtaz5kjfxtV58uVD6L%2BeYkygAT%2BE%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><strong>Marina Strovolidou<\/strong><\/a>, Head of Certification, Climate Bonds Initiative.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcy.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fannita-pavlou-70a33154%3Ftrk%3Dpublic_post-text&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cathina.kakopsitou%40uol.ac.cy%7C70a2728432ea4d7a53fb08dc23013586%7Cb5e1322f342e4a7ebb1e78d50e9fd700%7C0%7C0%7C638423735311914197%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=hnvPvhWmqegpmS4gLPoRXh5KaYYJCemmWqh6KQXujqs%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><strong>Annita Pavlou<\/strong><\/a>, Manager Investor Relations &amp; ESG, Bank of Cyprus, spoke on the bank\u2019s engagement with clients when it comes to the alignment of the client\u2019s business strategy with the ESG goals. Through such engagement, the regulators essentially push the banks to contribute to the green transition.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fde.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fschneidermadeline%3Ftrk%3Dpublic_post-text&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cathina.kakopsitou%40uol.ac.cy%7C70a2728432ea4d7a53fb08dc23013586%7Cb5e1322f342e4a7ebb1e78d50e9fd700%7C0%7C0%7C638423735311923549%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=w4gVT6xtMLMgmVD3%2B7CZDAjF4rOO8u%2FfN6Xf%2FdR9tYs%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><strong>Madeline Schneider<\/strong><\/a>introduced Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials. PCAF is a global partnership of financial institutions that work together to develop and implement a harmonized approach to assess and disclose the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with their loans and investments. \u2018What gets measured gets managed\u201d. \u00b7<\/li>\n<li>Practical insights on the legal and operational side of green energy projects in Cyprus were given by Makis Ketonis, Ketonis Developments Ltd \/ Future Fuels Ltd, and Panayiotis Demetriades, Senior Legal Advisor, Costas P.
