Tested for over 100 years, it has proved its effectiveness in three dimensions: transferring knowledge, advancing skills, and guiding students in their self-development, &#8211; the latter remains even more relevant and vital today, in the new age of AI.<\/p>\n<p>The case method is continuously evolving, and one such direction is experiential learning via Live Case Projects (LCPs). At the University of Limassol, we are embracing this innovative \u00a0pedagogical method following the best practices from the leading business schools globally.<\/p>\n<p>As emphasized by education consultant Svenia Busson in a recent HBP article, students today \u201cneed to be adaptable problem solvers, effective collaborators, and lifelong learners. Employers seek candidates who\u00a0demonstrate strong critical thinking and communication\u00a0over traditional competencies, yet these softer skills aren\u2019t consistently taught at institutions that prioritize a top-down model of professor-led learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We define an <strong>LCP as a <\/strong><strong>project-type academic course or element of a course in which students are introduced to a current real-life business challenge presented to them by the managers of a company<\/strong>.\u00a0Such projects may also be called &#8216;client-based&#8217; or &#8216;client-sponsored&#8217; projects and may form a part of a traditional academic course.\u00a0In an LCP, students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work in teams over a minimum period of two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Work under the guidance of an academic advisor<\/li>\n<li>Have an opportunity to interact with an industry mentor<\/li>\n<li>Develop solutions to the company\u2019s &#8220;live&#8221; business problem(s)<\/li>\n<li>Present solutions to decision-makers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Figure 1, we contrast learning with Live Case Projects versus learning with traditional cases (case studies).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19537\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed.png\" alt=\"unnamed\" width=\"1600\" height=\"845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed.png 1600w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-768x406.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1024x541.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1536x811.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure 1: Learning with Live Case Projects versus Regular Cases<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, I have been running an annual LCP for my business students for 7+ years and have witnessed first-hand its multiple benefits (see Figure 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19537\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1.png\" alt=\"unnamed (1)\" width=\"1600\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1.png 1600w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1-18x8.png 18w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1-768x352.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1-1024x469.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.uol.ac.cy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/unnamed-1-1536x704.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: center;\">Figure 2: Benefits of Live Case Projects<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past year, I have been involved in educational research aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of LCPs. We are an international group of faculty and industry professionals who are keen to gather international data on the effectiveness of LCPs. Our preliminary findings were presented at the 2023 conference of the North American Case Research Association in San Antonio, TX (see Figure 3 as a quick glimpse into students\u2019 perspective on LCPs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My appreciation goes to my esteemed colleagues in this international research project: Dr Anna Czegledi, Professor, Conestoga College, Canada; Michele M. In her role as MSc Program Director, Olga has gained extensive experience in running live case projects at CIIM \u2013 international business school in Cyprus, now part of the newly-formed University of Limassol.
