In an inspiring display of community spirit and collaborative learning, Lympia has become a dynamic hub for intergenerational education and action, where young people and seniors are working together to tackle shared local challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the InterGenic project- \u201cSupporting the EU’s Twin Transitions through Intergenerational Learning, Exchanges of Knowledge, and Joint Actions\u201d, a series of structured, interactive sessions took place in April and May 2025. These sessions were co-organized by the University of Limassol and the Materia Group, with the active participation of youth (United Youth of Lympia<\/a>) and seniors from the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the initiative lies the Facilitators\u2019 Handbook for Collaborative Action<\/a>, a comprehensive guide developed by the partnership under the InterGenic project. Following a well-structured 12-step process, the handbook provides practical tools and strategies that facilitate intergenerational collaboration, while promoting lifelong learning and adult education. The handbook is available online and free to download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sessions offered a powerful model for lifelong and intergenerational learning, rooted in shared experience, mutual respect, and co-creation. Participants explored themes such as digital literacy, green and sustainable practices, storytelling, and community problem-solving. With an emphasis on active collaboration between generations, seniors and youth worked together, shared their knowledge, digital and green skills, and lived experiences to create initiatives that can inspire similar actions across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of these sessions, the group co-developed an ambitious and inclusive proposal: to operate a Community Sustainability Center in Lympia. This idea combined elements from all ideas that were developed from the group work of five different teams, which included among others a youth center, a caf\u00e9 for women and a green park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intergenerational team proposed that the Center is hosted in an underutilized space in the community and transform this space into a vibrant community hub. The vision includes multifunctional areas for meetings, education and training, recycling and composting, relaxation and entertainment (such as music and board games), cultural and pop-up events, and much more. With support from local authorities, businesses, and residents, the Center will promote socialization, learning, green awareness, volunteering, and creativity for all. A representative committee is being formed to oversee the planning, design, funding, and long-term sustainability of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


This approach recognizes that lifelong learning which is defined as the ongoing development of skills and knowledge throughout a person\u2019s life, is essential in our rapidly evolving society. By drawing on the strengths of both age groups, the sessions have not only strengthened lifelong learning and intergenerational bonds but also sparked social innovation, offering transferable solutions that support the EU\u2019s green and digital transitions. These community-based collaborations serve as a living example of how education can bridge generations, empower communities, and drive sustainable change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The InterGenic project, co-funded by the European Union and the ERASMUS+ programme, brings together eight partners from seven countries- Cyprus, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Romania, and Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this initiative moves forward, Lympia stands as a leading example of what becomes possible when lifelong learning and intergenerational collaboration are placed at the core of community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next steps involve the presentation of the proposed solutions developed in each partner country during a transnational online meeting. This session will provide an opportunity for participants and partners from each country to exchange feedback, share ideas, and collaboratively refine the concepts before moving forward with their finalization and implementation, where feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
