Abstract : <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has long been recognized that many people appear to be interested in various types of goods that are primarily used to signal their social status. This paper experimentally investigates to what extent people’s tendency to invest in `status goods’ depends on whether (1) the cumulative amount of investment is visible or not, (2) one’s ability matters for success in joint activities (e.g., marriage or business), and (3) they are informed about it. In particular, we ask if people invest in status goods even when their ability does not matter for the success of joint activities because they believe it does, and such a belief is sustained as a self-fulfilling equilibrium. Our experimental results show that it is indeed the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Title 2<\/u><\/strong>: Rationality-Based Preference Aggregation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker:<\/u><\/strong> Syngjoo Choi (with Byunghun Hahn, Booyuel Kim, Minseon Park, Yoonsoo Park, and Euncheol Shin)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenter: <\/u><\/strong>We study how individual rationality affects group decision making using large-scale experiments with randomly assigned pairs. We develop a nonparametric revealed preference measure of bargaining power that applies to all subjects without requiring rationality or parametric utility functions. More rational individuals exert substantially greater influence on group decisions. Group decision quality increases with the rationality of the more rational member and decreases with the gap between members. The advantage of rational members is larger when communication is easier. Results establish causal effects of rationality on both bargaining power and collective choice quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
