Program Overview

The Master of Science (MSc) in Shipping Operations and Management is unique, innovative, and global by design, world-class in quality and affordable in cost. The program is unique in the region and possibly globally in being designed to cater to the needs of participants and employers through purely shipping-related courses. The program aims to equip students and shipping professionals with the knowledge, management skills and competencies required to pursue or enhance a successful career in shipping operations, and maritime management including maritime logistics.

 

The objectives of the course include:

  • To develop comprehensive knowledge in shipping using interdisciplinary insights.
  • To provide a global understanding of shipping and the maritime industry and to enable participants to apply the advanced knowledge gained to shipping operations and ship management.
  • To develop the expertise and professional outlook required to foster a successful career in international shipping and maritime logistics.

Program Learning Outcomes

Maritime and shipping economics by analysing the demand and supply in international trade and shipping, ship economics, and the economics of specialized shipping markets.

Charter markets, chartering practice and charter party analysis in dry cargo and tanker shipping, and how to analyse the terms & conditions, responsibilities & accountabilities in charter party contracts.

Financing of shipping operations and the management of risk in the shipping industry, including the financial performance of shipping firms and shipping-risk management tools, such as shipping derivatives.

Human resource practices in crew management and in particular leadership and team building, training, retention, safety and quality standards and performance management of the seafarers.

The legal issues arising from the transportation of goods by sea, and the principles governing contracts of the carriage of goods by sea and maritime insurance.

Environmental protection and safety in the shipping industry and in particular, how management uses key performance indicators to monitor safety and environmental protection.

Ship operations performance and optimization through models & techniques for effective ship operations management and data analytics for improving shipping operation efficiencies.

Port economics and logistics pertaining to the port development, operation, efficiency and governance, as well as logistics and the integration of ports and terminals in global supply chains.

Admissions Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program. In terms of GPA, we expect 2:2 and above from UK schools, 3.0 and above from US schools, and 6.5 and above or the equivalent from Cypriot and Greek Universities and colleges. Candidates with a lower grade than the above, might be admitted if they have compensatory strengths in terms of work experience or other accomplishments (for example, CFA, ACCA, or ACA).

Native speaker of English or graduate of a high school or university where the language of instruction is English, or IELTS with a score of at least 5.5, or TOEFL with a score of at least 250 (computerized) or 550 (conventional), or Password-plus 5.5.

A personal interview is an integral part of the selection process. The interview and documents providing evidence of the above qualifications are used as the basis for evaluating candidates. In cases where applicants have graduated from unfamiliar programs or universities, a GRE/GMAT examination score may be required.

Program Requirements

Dr Antonis Violaris

Antonis Violaris, Director of the MSc in Shipping Operations and Management, is a Lecturer in Economics & Finance at UoL. He holds a PhD in Finance and Economics from University of Durham, UK. He has extensive experience in shipping investments and analysis of the international markets, shipping and energy. He has been instrumental in setting up and successfully managing a number of investments in the shipping sector. Prior to joining UoL he was a visiting lecturer at Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) and has previously served as Lecturer in other local Universities and colleges and at the University of Durham.
