The PERiFORM Pushing Boundaries: Peripersonal Space as a Tool to Improve Sports Performance project, as part of the University of Limassol Department of Psychology’s booth, “Mind and Body as One”, participated in the European Researchers’ Night 2026, organized by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) in Cyprus.
The event was held on Friday, 25th of September 2026, at the Cyprus State Fair in Nicosia. Under this year’s theme “CELEBRATE 2.0 – Two Decades of STEAM-Powered Inspiration,” the event brought together researchers, academics, scientists, companies and organisations from across Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem. Over 5,000 visitors attended the event, including more than 2,000 school students who took part in organized visits and activities.
Representing PERiFORM, Principal Investigator Dr. Christodoula Gavriel introduced during the event an interactive activity titled “How Far Can You Reach?”. This activity invited children and visitors to discover the fascinating concept of peripersonal space, the invisible space surrounding our bodies where we reach for and interact with objects.
Through a playful, hands-on experiment involving a doll, everyday objects, and a simple tool, children explored how using tools can change our perception of the space around us. The activity offered an accessible and entertaining introduction to how the brain represents the space within our reach and adapts as we interact with our surroundings.
The activity also presented the research behind PERiFORM, which investigates how virtual reality training may influence peripersonal space and athletic performance, with a particular focus on boxing and football goalkeeping. The project also shared its objectives and explained how the public can participate in its ongoing research.
Overall, PERiFORM’s participation in European Researchers’ Night 2026 highlighted the value of making scientific research accessible to audiences of all ages. It was also an opportunity to connect with fellow researchers, exchange ideas, and inspire young visitors to discover how the brain and body work together.
The event represents an important contribution by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) Cyprus, providing a valuable space and opportunity for research projects such as PERiFORM to engage with and introduce their work to a wider public.
