Course Objectives
The objectives for this course are (1) to provide a comprehensive overview of accounting principles and standards to allow students develop and improve their financial intelligence so as to understand, interpret, and use accounting information to make (better) decisions and evaluate business performance as part of their job routine, and (2) introduce the fundamental concepts of the theory and practice of finance paying particular attention to helping managers make value-creating corporate finance decisions and balance risk and return issues in an optimal way. The course provides students with an analytical framework incorporating various financial planning techniques and tools, both short-term and long-term, which are needed to analyze a public or private organization, and design and implement a sound financial management strategy. The course covers the following key topics: financial statements analysis, forecasting and budgeting, financial decision-making frameworks, investment appraisal and capital budgeting. In this course students will learn to analyze financial strengths and weaknesses of a business/organization and design financial management strategies that align with overall strategic business objectives. Students will also learn to evaluate the feasibility and profitability of new business ventures, including conducting break-even analysis and employing scenario planning. The course also emphasizes the importance of effective communication and collaboration between financial managers and non-financial managers within a business/organization to ensure sound decision-making and successful business planning.

1. Define the goal of financial management, distinguish between various types of financial instruments and financial markets, master professional
terminology of Accounting and Finance to use it for effective communication.
2. Demonstrate awareness of the general principles of ethical financial reporting, interpret and use the key information contained in the financial
statements and in the management accounts.
3. Analyze the financial performance of an organization employing different financial analysis tools, evaluate its financial position, and describe the main
limitations of accounting information and financial statements.
4. Explain the process of forecasting and budgeting, employ break-even analysis, and use cost information to make sound financial decisions.
5. Explain the ‘value-oriented’ principles behind strategic financial decisions and apply the investment appraisal techniques such as the net present value, internal rate of return, and other.
6. Apply the concept of cost of capital to make corporate finance decisions and assess projects’ risks.
