Dr Ioannis Filippopoulos, Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the MSc in Shipping and Operations Management at the UoL, delivered a keynote lecture titled “Digital Transformation of Maritime Industry Using AI and IoT for the Development of Applications and Platforms” at the Maritime Platform Conference (UMPC 2025) in Malta.
This prominent international academic conference, hosted by the University of Malta, was themed “Innovation in Marine & Maritime Sustainable Developments: Research and Applications” and brought together global experts in maritime technology, research, and innovation.
In his keynote, Dr Filippopoulos explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are reshaping the maritime sector — enabling smarter digital platforms, enhancing operational efficiency, and supporting sustainable development goals. His presentation showcased real-world applications of these technologies, including autonomous maritime systems, logistics optimization, predictive maintenance, and environmental monitoring.
“We are witnessing a fundamental shift in how maritime operations are designed, managed, and optimized,” said Dr Filippopoulos. “AI and IoT are not just technological tools — they are strategic enablers for a smarter, more sustainable maritime future.”
