The 10th Ship IT Conference recently brought together key stakeholders from the maritime industry, including shipping companies, ports, regulators, and technology providers. One of the event’s highlights was a panel discussion titled “Navigating the Techno-Tides: The Impact of AI on Maritime Operations – AI Applications in the Shipping Industry,” featuring Dr. Ioannis Filippopoulos, Assistant Professor at the University of Limassol (UoL).
During the discussion, Dr. Filippopoulos shared his insights on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming maritime operations. He emphasized the role of AI in enhancing efficiency, optimizing performance, and improving safety within the shipping sector. Through big data analysis and predictive maintenance, AI is contributing to significant cost savings and a reduction in environmental impact.
The Ship IT Conference addressed key issues such as performance monitoring, big data, decarbonization, and cybersecurity, while offering practical solutions to support maritime digitalization and sustainability. Dr. Filippopoulos, who also co-directs the MSc Shipping and Operations Management program at UoL and is a member of AMMITEC, underscored the importance of AI adoption in maintaining the maritime industry’s competitiveness and sustainability in the digital age.
