We are proud to share exciting news on the research activity by our faculty.

This month, Dr Olga Kandinskaia, Associate Professor of Finance and Director of MSc in Green and Digital Management at UoL, participated in the 84th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Chicago, Illinois, United States (9-13 August, 2024).

The Academy of Management (AOM) is a leading professional association of scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations. The Academy’s central mission is to enhance the profession of management by advancing the scholarship of management and enriching the professional development of its members. There are more than 100 countries represented within the Academy’s membership.

The Annual Meeting is the world’s premier event for scholarly engagement, and the largest gathering of management and organization scholars in the world. The Annual Meeting offers attendees a chance to expand research, network with colleagues, and disseminate knowledge addressing the 21st century’s most pressing challenges related to management and organizations. This year, the conference had 10,000+ attendees.

Olga Kandinskaia was a co-presenter in the division of Management Education and Development MED-AOM – delivering a professional development workshop (PDW) “The Impact and Future of the Case Method” – along with distinguished co-panelists Vicky Lester, CEO of The Case Centre, and Antoine Duvauchelle, Co-founder of LiveCase and Adjunct Professor at INSEAD. Dr Olga Kandinskaia represented University of Limassol  and North American Case Research Association (NACRA) – her leadership role at NACRA this year is President. NACRA is a nonprofit, voluntary professional association whose mission is to promote excellence in case research, writing and teaching in business and other academic disciplines.

Olga’s part in the AOM panel session was titled “Extending the Case Method to Live Case Projects” and aimed to show how the case method can be extended to create impactful experiential learning activities such as Live Case Projects (LCPs).

As MSc Program Director, Dr Kandinskaia has been running annual live case projects at the CIIM Business School of the University of Limassol since 2016. She continues to arrange a variety of experiential learning activities for her students.

Live Case Project (LCP) is aproject-type academic course or element of a course in which students are introduced to a current real-life business challenge presented to them by the manager(s) of a company. Such projects may also be called ‘client-based’ or ‘client-sponsored’ projects and may form a part of a traditional academic course. In an LCP, students:

  • Work in teams over a minimum period of two weeks,
  • Work under the guidance of an academic advisor,
  • Have an opportunity to interact with an industry mentor,
  • Develop solutions to the company’s “live” business problem(s),
  • Present solutions to decision-makers.

While experiential learning as a pedagogical method is hardly new in business education, its practical adoption still varies substantially among institutions and highly depends on the ability as well as willingness of individual instructors.

As Dr Kandinskaia commented: “Today, with the rise of AI tools, there is a dramatic need to re-vamp our teaching strategies to ensure that meaningful learning indeed happens. This reflects the main theme of AOM2024: Innovating for the Future: Policy, Purpose, and Organization. When aligned with the learning objectives, designed in an interesting manner, and delivered with a focused effort, students find it stimulating to see a live business case in a learning environment. Also, faculty may find themselves happy with diving into the business world through projects addressing concrete business challenges.”
