The Explainable AI event, organized by the European Digital Education Hub, took place in Brussels on the 17th and 18th of October 2024. The event, which brought together professionals from the education, instructional technology, and technology sectors, aimed to stimulate discussions and learning about Explainable AI (XAI) for education, AI literacy, and various viewpoints on XAI. The collaborative workshops aimed to conclude with policy recommendations that would improve the integration of XAI in educational environments. As an autonomous project, the event aimed to improve the understanding and implementation of XAI throughout Europe.

Annita Eliade from the University of Limassol’s Research Center was an active participant in the Explainable AI event. She expressed her gratitude for being a part of the event, stating that she learned useful lessons and met intriguing people from all backgrounds. Sharing similar ideas and learning from diverse viewpoints, she emphasized the need for legislators, educators, and students to work together to build educational environments that are open to technology when necessary and applied responsibly. Following the program, Annita plans to leverage her experience in instructional technology to share the knowledge and techniques she gained with colleagues at the University and in other educational settings. Her goal is to encourage critical thinking when using emerging technologies and to promote responsible choices in how schools engage with these tools.

Participating in events such as the Explainable AI workshop demonstrates UoL’s dedication to properly and effectively integrating cutting-edge technology into education. The UoL seeks to create an environment in which technology is used carefully, ensuring that it meets the requirements of educators and students while fostering transparency, accountability and ethical practices in educational technology.
