Employee resourcing, appraisal and talent management deals with the study of the main tools, techniques and critical knowledge required by the HR professional in dealing successfully with the three most important HR functions: Resourcing, Appraisal and Talent Management. The subjects covered throughout the lectures will introduce students to the current way of successfully attracting, recruiting, appraising and managing talent in modern organizations, with particular reference to the international organization. It will also help students appreciate the strategic importance and demonstrate the mutual dependence and integration of Resourcing, Appraisal and Talent Management in creating sustainable HR practices and improving organizational performance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key terms, theories/concepts, practices, and trends that relate to attracting, recruiting and selecting employee, as well as for assessing employee resourcing, performance/development and talent management.
  • Integrate theoretical knowledge and/or analyze, synthesize and interpret relevant data and information in order to solve complex problems and exercise judgment on issues that relate to employee resourcing, performance/development and talent management.
  • Apply theoretical models and concepts to evaluate critically HR practices that relate to employee resourcing, performance/development and talent management and provide recommendations for improvement.

Course Features

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This class is based on the textbook, in-class discussions, lectures, case studies, guest talks and videos. Attendance to class is mandatory as there is material discussed in class that is not in the textbook. All material will be considered for the final exam.
Aside from attendance, there are certain behavioural expectations for
appropriate conduct within the class. Tardiness and early departures are frowned upon as they disrupt the flow of the class. If you must leave the class early, then please inform me at the start of class. Please be prepared for the class by having read the material (especially the HBR case studies)
assigned for the class ahead of time.

Assessment methods and criteria
10% Class participation: Students work in small groups on real-life case studies / role plays related to attraction, selection, selection, performance appraisal and talent management. They have to discuss the issues related to the case studies and present them in class. These cases and presentations are used as a basis for in-class discussion.

25% Group assignment – Case Study: The assignment assesses students’ ability to identify and suggest solutions of real-life HR-related problem(s).
Students will work on real-life HR problem(s)/dilemma. The problem could be related to any of the topics covered during the lectures, e.g. attraction, selection, performance appraisal and talent management. Your report should include a detailed description of the problem, the issues involved, the potential stakeholders and the solutions/proposals you suggest. Be realistic and work with normal organizational constraints. Late submissions are not accepted.

65% Final Exam: Final exam assesses students’ overall understanding of key issues and topics relevant to the course
The final exam is an open-book examination. The content of the exam will be based on the presentations, textbook, case studies, class discussion, supplemental readings, exercises, and videos discussed in class. You are expected to take the examinations when scheduled. More details about the exam will be provided during the first lecture.
