The aim of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge of the legal issues arising from the transportation of good by sea, and as well as principles regarding the governance of contracts of the carriage of goods by sea.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic principles underlying time, voyage and bareboat charterparties.
  • Know the key principles of the Hague-Visby Rules and the UK Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1992.
  • Identify and analyse the main types of dispute which commonly arise between the shippers, receivers and carriers of goods carried by sea.
  • Apply the fundamentals of English commercial law to the resolution of such disputes.
  • Analyse complex commercial problems in the shipping markets.
  • Integrate the concepts of marine insurance to develop theoretical and practical alternatives in controlling insurable risks in the shipping industry. The course focuses on the fundamental issues in marine insurance and presents the relationship between the Marine Insurance Act 1906, case law and the standard terms of the Institute Clauses (cargo and hulls). The course also addresses General Average, the war risk insurance and P & I Clubs.
