Meet Dean Maria Sakelariou
Maria Sakellariou is Professor of Pedagogy and Chair of the Department of Educational Sciences at the University of Limassol, and as of 1 November 2025 she assumed her duties as Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Limassol. She studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (BSc) (1987), where she completed her Master’s (MSc) (1989) and Doctoral Studies (Ph.D.) (1998) with a special emphasis on Pedagogical Science, as well as at the Alexandria Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki with a special emphasis on Preschool Pedagogy (BSc) (1993). Her studies include international seminars and courses in Pedagogy, Psychology and Sociology of Religion at the University of Zurich in Switzerland (1992).
Before joining the University of Limassol, she was a Professor at the School of Educational Sciences of the University of Ioannina (2002-2024), where she served as President of the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Ioannina (from 01/10/13 to 30/11/2018), as well as Director of the Postgraduate Program in “Early Childhood Education” with six (06) specializations (2014-2024). She is still the Director of the Series: Education: Design, Organization, Administration, at Pedio Publications.
She taught as a Visiting Professor in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Programs of the Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Cyprus, as well as in the Postgraduate Program of Studies “Gender and New Technologies in Education” implemented by the TEPAES of the University of the Aegean. She teaches in the Postgraduate Program of Studies of the University of Crete, “Critical Pedagogy” and in the Transnational Postgraduate Program of Studies of the National University of Athens “Counseling Psychology and Pedagogy”.
Her research interests and writings focus on issues of Pedagogy and Preschool/Early Childhood Education, particularly in the cognitive areas of Teaching Methodology, Curriculum Design and Evaluation, Social and Moral Learning, Religious Education in the context of Intercultural Education, Creative Learning, Inclusive Education, Smooth Transition, Differentiated Teaching and Learning, Play-Based Teaching, as well as School-Family-Community Collaboration.
He is the author and co-editor of 28 scientific books from national and international publishing houses, including the following: Family and Kindergarten Collaboration: Theory – Research – Teaching Suggestions (2008), Teaching Methods. Many of her books have been translated into five languages. She has also edited Proceedings of International Conferences and has published over 180 research papers and articles in international peer-reviewed journals, in collective volumes and conference proceedings https://earlychildhoodpedagogy.gr She has supervised 17 complete PhD Theses at the University of Ioannina, has co-supervised over 20 PhD Theses at the University of Ioannina, the University of Crete, the University of Thessaly and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, while she has co-supervised 16 complete PhD Theses at the University of Cyprus. Her PhDs serve as academic members in various Greek Universities and Education executives.
