MENTAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH IN THE 21st CENTURY
THEMATIC AREA 3
Offered in Greek and English
Can science answer our questions in a simple way? Can the data explain why one child is violent, why another does not speak up, and why a third will live to the age of a hundred? How does mental health in pregnancy affect the child’s immune system, how does the child’s brain develop and why social adaptability is essential for their happiness? 75 – 80% of all mental illnesses in the world could have been prevented by methods such as educating parents from the beginning of the child’s life, systematic vocational training, and timely and valid intervention. The understanding of parents and citizens about the importance of mental and social health has is associated with better functioning of the child in the family and at school, with increased resilience to the changes and challenges of the 21st century, with healthier relationships and with a better quality of life 40 and 50 years later.
