This year, on the International Day of Education, we celebrate more than just the universal right to learn. We recognize a profound shift: education is not just for youth, but it is increasingly shaped by youth.
This year’s UNESCO theme, “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education,” is a call to move beyond seeing students as passive recipients of knowledge and to embrace them as essential partners, innovators and architects of their own educational journey. As UNESCO highlights, this is particularly true at a time when the technological revolution calls for rethinking the purpose and modalities of teaching and learning.
Co-creating education means actively involving learners’ voices in shaping curriculum, learning methods, and policies, and involving them as equal partners, rather than simply as consultants. When we harness this collaborative power, we build education systems that are more engaging, inclusive, and equipped to meet the complex challenges of tomorrow.
This day is a reminder to all of us—educators and policymakers—to listen deeply, create space for dialogue, and commit to genuine partnership. Together, we can co-create an education that truly empowers every learner and helps them meet their aspirations and ambitions.
