Meet the Dean
Meet Dean Andreas Artemiou
Andreas Artemiou is a Professor of Quantitative methods and Analytics at the University of Limassol. He received his MSc (2008) and his Ph.D. (2010) in Statistics from the Department of Statistics at Pennsylvania State University, and his BSc (2005) in Mathematics and Statistics with a minor in Computer Science from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Cyprus. He is currently serving in the Board of Directors of the European Section of the International Association of Statistical Computing (2022-2026) and as an Associate Editor of Computational Statistics and Data Analysis (2021- today). Before joining the University of Limassol in September 2023 he held positions in Michigan Technological University (Assistant Professor, 2010-2013), Statistics and Applied Mathematics Research institute (Research Fellow 2012-2013) and Cardiff University (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader 2013-2023).
His research interests are around high-dimensional statistics, dimension reduction, machine/statistical learning as well as philosophical aspects of the statistical theory. He has published a number of papers (45+ as of Sept 2023) in top statistics and pattern recognition journals. He maintains collaborations with a number of researchers in other fields including, Computer Science, Engineering, Medical Sciences, Biosciences, Pharmacy. He currently (co-)supervises 5 PhD students and has (co-)supervised 6 PhD students to completion. He has supervised more than 25 MSc students on their Master theses and more than 20 BSc students in their final year projects.
He is an enthusiastic teacher who takes the role of the teaching very seriously. He has received numerous positive feedback for the positive environment he maintains in the classroom, the enthusiasm he has as a teacher and his approach to using technology within the classroom. As he often says “Teaching is ministration. As academics we have to care and we have to instil the enthusiasm and the love we have for our field to our students. We need to inspire them to become successful professionals to whatever their choice is in the future. We need to give them the resources and the foundations to help them explore their boundaries and not place them into our own boundaries.”
Professor Artemiou has had a number of roles throughout his career which were at the forefront of student support. Students in the School of Technology and Innovation will meet him around the school and they will realize that he is very approachable, understanding and supportive person. He always says that academics need to “Inspire to make a difference to the lives of their students” and this is the moto he is using in his everyday interactions both with other academics as well as students in the school. He also encourages his students to use his first name “Andreas” when they address him, whether it is to discuss academic or personal matters.
In our Dean’s face you can see a friendly mentor who is looking forward to lead our School to the forefront of research in Data Science that provides the best educational programs to our students. The rise and recognition of UoL School in Technology and Innovation as one of the best within Cyprus at first and then internationally is not only a matter of our staff. Our students will have a major role and we invite them to feel confident to talk with our Dean whenever they have an issue or suggestion which they feel the School needs to address.
