We proudly participated in the international conference “Evidence Matters Before Regional Human Rights Courts: the African Court in Critical and Comparative Perspective,” held at the Future Africa Campus of the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
The conference was organised within the framework of the ERC-funded DISSECT: Evidence in International Human Rights Adjudication research project, led by Prof. Marie-Bénédicte Dembour of Ghent University, and formed part of the celebrations marking the 20th Anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Representing UoL, Prof. Demetra Sorvatzioti, Vice Rector for International Affairs & Research, presented a paper examining the comparative understanding of evidentiary matters within the Common Law and Continental legal traditions and their impact on regional human rights adjudication. Recognised for her expertise in comparative evidence law, Prof. Sorvatzioti’s presentation also drew upon themes explored in her recent Brill publication on International Criminal Evidence Law before the ICC.
Bringing together distinguished academics, judges, legal practitioners, and researchers from across jurisdictions, the conference provided an important international platform for critical discussions on evidentiary standards, judicial reasoning, and the evolving landscape of international human rights justice.
